As we reported last month the damage caused by forest fires in the summer of 2013, which destroyed around 2400 acres of forest and bush land, has had a drastic effect on soil erosion in the area.

Recent bad weather, severe rain storms and wind, in conjunction with the erosion, meant that some of the dead trees were susceptible to uprooting and this is exactly what happened. Despite barriers being in place on this stretch of road, the new project for securing the area has not yet been completed. This incident highlights the need for this planned action.

The police were alerted early on Monday morning by a motorist, and the fire department closed the road for the morning, although only for a few hours. The road re-opened once they had cleared the debris and secured the area.

In recent weeks many have pine trees have fallen on that stretch of road despite protective barriers installed by the Island Council. The current work to secure the area is set to take at least another 8 to 9 months to complete.
