La Caixa Forum - Portraits of an Escape

featured in News & reviews Author Emily Benet, Mallorca Reporter Updated

If you suddenly had to flee your home, what would be the most important thing you would take with you?

This is the theme of the photography exhibition currently being held at Caixa Forum in Palma. The huge black and white portraits, taken by American photojournalist, Brian Sokol share the stories of 24 different people who found themselves in that situation.

It's difficult not to feel moved by their testimonies, which are translated in Spanish, Catalan and English. A saucepan, a sewing machine and a carpet were just some of the items that people had taken on their arduous journeys to safety. One young boy took his pet monkey. The images are powerful and thought-provoking, transporting you from the busy centre of a thriving city to the uncertainty of refugee camps.

The conflicts in Syria, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and Mali have forced over 12 million people from their home. However this exhibition aim is to transform those statistic into something more tangible and humane.

The exhibition, organised in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, will be on until 10th January 2016 at Caixa Forum. Entry is 4€ and free for La Caixa account holders.
