Cocktails at Bar Weyler, Palma de Mallorca

A place to chill out over great cocktails and funk music

Bar Weyler is a stylish cocktail bar in the centre of Palma with an excellent selection of spirits and professional staff who know how to work their magic with them.

Their shaded terrace is adjacent to the attractive, modernist Gran Hotel, which makes for a pleasant view while having a drink al fresco. Being close to a busy street, I preferred to slip inside the cool exterior and watch my drinks being artfully prepared at the bar while listening to relaxing funk music.

The young bar tender welcomed the challenge of making me something off menu. He introduced me to a Malibu Stacey, a variation of a Mai Tai, with dark rum and exotic passion fruit, presented while still flaming. The fruit's sweet and sour flavour lingered on my tongue, rich and refreshing.

Next, he made a classic vermouth martini. "To be a great barman, you just need a jigger, a book and some humility," he said, playing down his talent as he expertly twisted lemon peel. My companion had an old fashioned served in an attractive glass with a perfectly round ball of ice. Meanwhile, a customer outside was presented with iced tea in a jam jar with a mint garnish. Presentation couldn't be faulted.

Weyler is soon to be working with the award-winning mixologist, Juan Antonio Garcia, and a new cocktail menu is less than a month away. Our bar tender's eyes lit up as he talked about the bar stepping it up a level. For now though, the comprehensive menu lists all the classics plus enticing specials. How about a Smoke Baby, with smoked laphroaig whisky, grapefruit syrup, coriander and bitters? Tempted? Prices start at 7.50€.

The bar serves salads and sandwiches, as well as coffees and homemade cakes. Open from 10:00 it's a perfect place to escape the heat and take a break from exploring the city at any time of the day. Popular with the locals, it's busiest in the evenings and weekends. It's a space to unwind over great cocktails, rather than to dance the night away!
