Casa Font i Roig Review

The perfect rural retreat in Mallorca

Author Jose Rains, Mallorca Reporter Updated

In the sleepy rural village of Maria de la Salut, just north of Sineu, you will find one of Mallorca’s best-hidden treasures, Casa Font i Roig.

This 16th-century mansion turned boutique accommodation occupies a tranquil setting at the very edge of the village and is surrounded by lush vegetation, almond and orange trees. One of this place's unique selling points is its spectacular views across Mallorca’s countryside. The building itself has been tastefully restored, with many of the historical features still remaining intact. At the same time, the current Swiss owners have cleverly infused the place with all the luxury comforts one could want from an indulgent get-away-from-it-all retreat.

Arriving at Casa Font i Roig, we drove up to the reception area of the charming sandstone building. Stepping through the main entrance, guests are greeted with elegant but cosy furnishings. In the small reception area, we were met by the friendly Chantal. After a smooth check-in, we were directed to our room, Pina.

There are 13 rooms available, each designed differently. Having researched the establishment before arriving, we learnt there are 7 luxurious bedrooms in the main house as well as some more recent additions in the form of 2 junior suites and 4 suites in the out-buildings. Pina is one of the original rooms within the main building, and Chantal informed us it had some of the best views.

We ventured upstairs and passed a lovely small lounge area, once again equipped with luxury furnishings and a pool table. There was definitely a home-from-home feel throughout the palce. Walking into the room, I was struck at how enormous our dwelling was. There was a small corridor with two sets of fitted wardrobes, in which the entrance to the large bathroom resided. The bathroom was kitted out with a shower, double basin area, a bidet and more.

The bedroom was an immense space with a large double bed, a small sitting area and some beautiful double doors. I could spy those views even from the entrance to the bedroom and had the urge to walk straight over and open our double doors to fully embrace the spectacular sight of Mallorca’s inland plains…wow!

The room captured the building's history and gave it some real personality, with traditional ceramic floors, ceiling beams and some exposed stone walls. Modern furnishings and luxury textiles perfectly complimented these original features. I was particularly taken with the oversized mirror on one wall, certainly a statement piece.

After settling down, we decided to explore the grounds. Down the stairs and out through the reception area, we entered the dining room which was a charismatic space with a splendid little bar. Then out to the terrace. Here we were again met with those enchanting views. A blonde stone outdoor bar also featured here, along with a massive St John's bread tree and a lovely terrace with rattan furniture where people could make the most of the views. There were a few people doing just that whilst having a little aperitif before dinner. That particular evening (Friday) it was the BBQ night, which was held on another terrace embellished with lots of lush green foliage.

The outdoor pool and sun terrace could be found down the steps from the main building. From here, we could peer across to the outbuildings where the suites were located. I was particularly impressed with how these new additions, along with a separate building encompassing a state-of-the-art spa and gym, had been built to fit in with the rural setting.

The spa area is hosted within a 220m2 pavilion crafted from Majorcan sandstone and provides the perfect little sanctuary for some rest and rehabilitation. The design includes large windows, which means spa guests can still enjoy the epic scenery from the indoor swimming pool where there are even some underwater loungers with jets. The spa also features an ice fountain, a Turkish sauna and two mammoth adventure showers. Complete with a full wellness programme available by appointment, you could easily spend the whole afternoon here.

The gym within the same pavilion features modern cardio machines overlooking the grounds and a separate weight and mat area. If you are keen to get active whilst exploring some of the local areas, it’s worth knowing that bike hire is also available upon request.

After spending a wonderful evening at the BBQ bonanza that took place, we were ready for a good night’s sleep, and that we had. Having put the air conditioning on before dinner, we returned to a lovely cool room at bedtime.

Breakfast is always one of the things I look forward to when I'm away from home. Served between 8:30 and 11:00 in the morning, we made our way downstairs to the dining room. Out on a large long table, we spotted a range of pastries, fresh bread, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, and various juices. At the sides were some lovely cheeses and charcuterie meats displayed. Upon entering the dining room, the waitress greeted us and showed us out to the terrace where we could enjoy the scenery over breakfast. Coffee, tea and cooked breakfasts like eggs were also available upon request. A great way to start the day!
