Raixa Nights in Mallorca

A fine Mallorca country house is hosting music concerts

featured in Events reviews Author Shirley Roberts, Mallorca & Soller Correspondent Updated

The Soller road from Palma cuts through fertile lands of almond and olive groves. The odd goat and flocks of sheep graze in the surrounding fields. A straight road that gives no clue of the vast estates that lie on either side of the road and the interesting stories they have to tell. A few years ago Jill Sander, the German fashion designer, was prepared to spend 8 million euros on one of these estates and her interest sparked government intervention.

The history of Raixa snuggled at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range dates back to the presence of the Muslims on Mallorca who chose this site as the base for Raixa House and farmlands because of its plentiful water supply and fertile lands. The area was cultivated between the 15th and 19th centuries and the magnificent classical palace of Raixa was built between 1750 and 1800 by Antoni Despuig I Dameto. The gardens and the impressive stairway has featured as a back drop to many films, and Agatha Christie fans visit to see the setting of Evil Under the Sun which was filmed here.

Jill Sander, with her eye for beauty and style pursued this house and the story goes that she was at the point of acquisition when the Mallorca Government realized that one of their national treasures was about to leave them. Suffice it to say that Raixa is now in the hands of the government and the university and is being preserved for the nation.

A massive project is underway to renovate the house and gardens to make the place welcoming to visitors, and at last it is open. You can visit the house and stroll in the 52 acre garden on Saturday and Sunday between 10 – 2 pm. Groups can contact the management direct to arrange visits outside these times and more information can be found on their website www.raixa.cat
