Mallorca Rocks faces legal challenge

Mallorca Rocks has been accused by Acotur (the body representing Mallorcan businesses in the tourism sector) of not having the correct license to hold their series of summer concerts. The Consell de Mallorca has now been advised by their legal team that the Mallorca Rocks hotel may in fact only have permission to host one concert, rather than a series of seventeen.

The laws in Mallorca require hotels to gain a 'special authority' if they wish to host an 'extraordinary activity', such as music concerts. For a whole summer of concerts, they need to obtain a 'secondary use' license which would authorise the hotel to provide accommodation plus a concert venue. This license may be impossible to obtain as Calvia council do not allow change of use for tourist buildings.

Acotur received complaints by businesses in the area who claim that Mallorca Rocks has an unfair advantage over them by not complying with the rules. They use Pascha as an example of where the nightclub was forced to adhere to the strict licensing laws, whereas Mallorca Rocks has not been investigated.

The Fiesta Group, who own the Mallorca Rocks Hotel, say that they have all necessary permissions and that they plan to continue with their summer season as advertised. The group came under fire last year for the same complaint, but fought the claim by saying the concerts were a 'legally authorised initiative' supported by the local hotel association of Palmanova-Magaluf and Calvia council.
