Will Majorca beaches go smoke free

Beaches in Gran Canaria ban smoking, is Mallorca next?

Gran Canaria is imposing "smoke free zones" on 75% of it's beaches in the popular Mogan area this summer and there is mounting pressure from anti-smoking groups for this to spread to more public areas across Spain. Will Majorca beaches follow?

At the moment Spanish law states that smoking is legal in open public spaces but there are a few places where pressure from anti smoking campaigners has meant that "No Smoking" signs have been set up. The most recent of these is the walls of Avila which which recently joined the Camp Nou football stadium in Barcelona where smoking was banned at the beginning of the year.

There is now mounting pressure to make all Spanish beaches smoke free, or to create separate areas for smokers and non smokers. Although the Secretary General of the National Committee for the Prevention of Nicotine Poisoning, Dr Francisco Camarelles admits there is a reduced risk of toxins from cigarettes reaching harmful levels in the open air he welcomes any initiative which raises social awareness of the dangers of smoking saying; "Here at the CNPT, we support any and all measures designed to raise social awareness and control tobacco use."

As yet Majorca beaches are not smoke free but it will be interesting to see what the politicians in Palma decide to do in the future.
