The official opening of Rafa Nadal Sports Centre was celebrated yesterday in a ceremony that gathered some of the biggest names in sports, politics and business, including Nadal's rival and friend Roger Federer.

The presence of the Swiss champion and current number eight of the ATP ranking was the main attraction of a ceremony also attended by the president of Telefónica, José María Álvarez, a company that co-sponsors Nadal's sports centre, and presented by former football player and sports commentator Michael Robinson.

Other sports legends rallied around the Mallorcan tennis player, including motorcycling champion Ángel Nieto and former Wimbledon winner Albert Costa. The president of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, was also present, as were ATP president Chris Kermode and Wimbledon chairman Phillip Brook.

Rafa stated how this academy is "a dream come true" and "where his future is". The extensive sports centre includes 26 tennis courts, 2 swimming pools, a fitness centre, a 7-a-side football pitch, 10 padel courts, a multipurpose court, a clinic, a school, and extensive gardens. In late September an open doors day was celebrated at the sports centre featuring some of the best Spanish athletes who taught master classes and played friendly matches to test its extensive facilities.
