A Spanish ferry on route to Valencia from Mallorca caught fire yesterday around 27km off the coast of Mallorca.

The Sorrento's passengers were evacuated into lifeboats and were then rescued by another boat. They are believed to have been brought back to Mallorca last night.

The fire started in one of the car decks but at this stage the cause is unknown. Soon after the ferry sent out distress signals and a number of boats nearby came to the rescue.

Three people have been injured, one seriously, and they were taken to hospital by helicopter.

Take a look at this video of the rescue helicopters arriving on scene.

*Update 30th April*

The fires are now out, the ferry is being cooled down, and it's believed that the Sorrento will be towed back to port in Mallorca. It was thought that the ferry might sink yesterday, causing pollution from its fuel and the contents of the may freight vehicles on board, however today if the ship remains stable it will be brought back to Palma. Meetings are taking place this morning to agree what action needs to be taken.
