Branson back in Mallorca

First look at Sir Richard Branson’s Son Bunyola Estate

featured in News & reviews Author Pam Williamson, Mallorca Editor Updated

Virgin Limited Edition, Sir Richard Branson’s privately owned collection of award-winning luxury hotels and retreats, has added another stunning venue to its already exceptional array.

The wonderful country finca of Son Bunyola, located near Banyalbufar, was Branson's property until he sold it in 2002 because the local council blocked his proposal to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel. Buying back the property in 2015, Branson's Virgin Limited Edition has now opened villas Sa Punta De S’Aguila and Sa Terra Rotja, which are situated on the Son Bunyola Estate as part of their award winning accommodation collection. At the heart of the estate is an historic Finca building dating back to the 1800’s surrounded by vines, citrus fruit trees, almond and olive trees. This building is currently unused and forms an incredible centrepiece to the dramatic scenery.

With its own gated entrance, the estate covers some 700 acres and is located in between Esporles and Banyalbufar on the Northwest coast of Mallorca. The area is dominated by the Tramuntana mountain range with its breath-taking scenery, and is home to some of the most historical and picturesque towns on the island.

The villas

Sa Punta de S’Aguila translates as ‘Eagle’s Point’. This five bedroom villa is built in traditional Mallorcan style, with exposed beam ceilings and terracotta tiled floors. Offering total privacy, the villa has been sympathetically built into the landscape and boasts panoramic sea and mountain views. Sa Punta de S’Aguila has its own heated swimming pool, kitchen, living room and dining area. This villa comfortably sleeps 10 adults in 5 en-suite bedrooms.

Sa Terra Rotja translates as ‘red earth’ from the local Mallorquí language, and this private four-bedroom villa is situated near the edge of the estate and a short walk from a pebble beach. Sa Terra Rotja also has its own heated swimming pool and plenty of space on the terrace for sunbathing, outdoor dining and watching the sun set over this exclusive and beautiful corner of the island. This villa comfortably sleeps 8 adults in 4 en-suite bedrooms.

"Welcome to Son Bunyola, my favourite Mallorcan retreat! From here you can appreciate the stunning beauty of the Mediterranean from the tranquillity of your own private villa. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as I always do." - Sir Richard Branson.

There is no doubt about the Virgin founder's love for Mallorca. His son Sam even named his own daughter Eva-Deia in honour of the western Mallorca town. His departure from the island in 2002 was hasty, selling not only Son Bunyola but also the beautiful La Residencia Hotel. Hopefully his return will be long-lived.
