Mallorca celebrated the Day of the Balearic islands yesterday with a whole host of festivities honouring the archipelago's culture and gastronomy. Among the many events, Parc de la Mar in Palma hosted the first ever Ensaimada World Championship, which crowned a bakery in Inca as kings of the local pastry.

Ten patisseries from Mallorca, Menorca and Barcelona fought for the first prize, 1000kg of high-quality flour. Forn Sant Francesc from Inca took home the title of World's Best Ensaimada, while Forn d'Es Casino from Banyalfufar were named second and Panadería y Pastelería Coll de Sant Jordi in Palma were crowned third.

The jury included experts from the Balearic Bakery Association and famous gastronomic influencers. All ensaimadas had to be plain and without any powder sugar on top for the blind tastings.

The ensaimada is Mallorca's best-known pastry. A delicious, flaky roll eaten for breakfast or 'merienda' (afternoon snack), which can incorporate different fillings including savoury sobrassada. It's also a unique souvenir to bring back home from a trip to Mallorca. Now you know where the best on the island (and the world!) are made.
