Friday’s stormy weather and the recent sighting of a large blue shark around the island didn’t hold back SUP fanatics taking part in the annual event over the weekend of the 14th May 2016.

The tournament is a part of the Paddle Surf Euro Tour led by Laura Quetglas, a renowned SUP competitor that has made her own name within this sport worldwide. She works closely with her partner Manuel Simoncelli and Port Adriano sports centre to deliver this fresh high profile event.

For those who aren’t sure what Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is? Stand up paddle boarders maintain an upright stance on their boards and use a paddle to push themselves through the water. It is a water-sport that originates from Polynesian cultures, like Hawaii, but has become a popular sport around the world in the last few years. There are various forms of stand up paddling, including flat water paddling for outdoor recreation, fitness, sightseeing and racing. Recently, I have even spotted people participating in SUP Yoga!

On arrival to the port, you couldn’t help but notice the striking turquoise waters that lapped the small soft, white sandy beach of Port Adriano. A gazebo and crowd of spectators marked the finish line of the SUP race, where competitors would be welcomed by their energetic supporters upon completion of the race. There were a number of people wearing branded T-shirts, black for those promoting the race and red signalling the competitors taking part in the race.

We quickly found a spot on the beach to set down our towels and picnics so we could watch the races and soak up the atmosphere (and sun of course). Emotions were high and we were close enough to the finish line to capture all the different types of emotions from both the competitors and spectators.

A little while later I found myself exploring the port in a bid to get a closer look at the competitors at the start of the races. En route I found the display of SUPs from Port Adriano’s Mar Balear Water Sports Centre, along with a couple of stalls selling t-shirts, jewellery and sunglasses. Here I also found people congregating in the after-care area for competitors with well-deserved food and physio.

At the end of the pontoon, there were more supporters cheering on their family and friends at the start of the race. It seemed to be mainly Spanish competitors and the Spanish crowd certainly know how to cheer someone on!

Port Adriano is an impressive port designed Philippe Starck. There is plenty on offer with a beautiful beach, a variety of restaurants and designer shops. You can really spend the whole day and evening here after the event.

There were people of all ages and levels competing, so if you fancy giving it a go next year, make sure you get practising and register in advance. A great day out for families and friends of all ages!

Opening Times: This event takes place annually in May. The times are weather dependent but recommend spending the day in Port Adriano.

Entry: Free entry for adults and children.

Transport: There is free parking in Port Adriano, alternatively if you are coming from Palma, Portals, Santa Ponsa or the route from Peguera 104 and 105 buses that stop off just outside the port (Entrada el Toro- bus stop). Taxis are available from just outside the port entrance on the round-about.
