What's On this Week: 2nd May 2013
Superyachts, Ballet and beer this weekend in Palma
If you are looking for something to do this weekend in Mallorca you are spoilt for choice. There are so many fairs, festivals, concerts and shows on over the next few days and you can find details about them all in our Events Calendar but for a run down of our top five read on....
For yachties there is not one but two events to get your aft lines in a twist over, but they are quite similar so I'll count them as one. The Palma International Boat Show began yesterday but runs until the fifth of May. The boat show is held in the Palma superyacht marina Moll Vell and has a huge list of exhibitors. There are tapas stalls and late night events that include music and concerts and the Palma Vela which is an international regatta. Tickets are available from the marina.
The second event for fans of yachts is down at the super-luxury, super-stylish superyacht marina Port Adriano. The Superyachts Days is now in it's second year and is designed for prospective superyacht owners to come to the harbour to see the latest models from yacht builders. Last year's event had over forty boats, all over 20m, and attracted ten thousand visitors. The event is designed to be a family event so children and adults are welcome.
It's a big weekend for all things nautical and technically the next event is part of the Boat Show but it's held up at Es Baluard art gallery and looks like it could be great even for those who don't own a superyacht; The Maremostra Film Festival.
The film festival is on from the 4th -11th on May and is concerned with all things oceanographic. The surf film Raw, which won the best cinematography at the New York SFF, and the Oscar nominated Kon Tiki look like great films and well worth seeing on the big screen.
Going a little more high brow than surf films with a dub-step sound track the Moscow Ballet will be performing Swan Lake at the Palma Auditorium on Saturday night. Tickets are available from the Auditorium and this is a chance to see one of the world's foremost ballet companies performing one of the most beloved ballets of all time.
For a refreshing drink in the sun why not visit the Palma Beer Festival which has been extended until the 12th May. Although it got off to a slow start with some unusually inclement weather it has become a popular event and has been granted another week on the promenade below Palma Cathedral. There are seventy exhibitors on the ticket and plenty of beers to try.
Finally the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival starts on Friday and runs 'til Sunday fifth. The only smooth jazz festival in the Mediterranean is in the north east of the island in Sa Coma. Grammy winning artists and some of the most successful stars of the contemporary and smooth jazz scene will be attending and for fans of the genre it should be a great weekend of music.
There are sporting events, parties and more taking place this weekend and in the coming weeks in Mallorca. Each week we'll pick out some highlights but for a full list of what's on visit our Events Calendar. Enjoy your weekend.
