Mallorca's yacht charters sold out in August

featured in News & reviews Author Nicola Henderson, Site Editor Updated

Yacht charter companies in Mallorca have reported a sell out for their boats this August, with bookings up 20% from last year. Significant numbers of French and Russians have been chartering yachts this summer, along with the Germans who also enjoy hiring their own yacht to explore the waters around Majorca and the other Balearic Islands.

Whilst numbers have increased, so has the number of inspections from the Guarda Civil. The popularity of yachting is such that there are not enough moorings to be had at the popular spots, such as the Cabrera Marine Natural Park, off the south east coast of Mallorca. Illegal moorings can result in fines as officials seek to protect the marine ecosystems. The Yacht Charter Association has called for an increased number of moorings (20-30%) in areas that do not pose a risk to nautural wildlife, to accommodate their members at these popular spots.

The issue of moorings in the Balearic Islands is further complicated by the cost - supply and demand mean that prices go up 50% in the summer season. To moor a yacht over 15 metres in length, owners can expect to pay the highest daily prices in the Mediterranean. Mooring a 30-40 metre boat in Majorca during August will set you back around €1200 per day. But this is cheap when you compare it to neighbouring Ibiza, where the price rockets to around €1600 per day.
