Mallorca continues to be an exceptional breeding ground for top-rate sportspeople. No less than five medals have been brought from the Rio Olympics to the island, a great feat for our local islanders.

Two gold medals were won by Manacor born Rafa Nadal in men's tennis doubles and Cala d'Or resident Marcus Cooper Walz, who arrived in first place at the K1 1000 final. Alba Torrens, the Binissalem born shooting guard for the Spanish basketball team, got the silver medal in a match against the United States.

Two other Mallorcans were part of the men's basketball team, which took bronze in a nail-biting final against Australia ending with a narrow score of 88-89: Rudy Fernández, who plays for Real Madrid, and Álex Abrines, player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, both born in Palma. Also from the Balearics is Sergio Llull, originally from Mahó in Menorca.

Congratulations to all of them!
