Review of Luxury Boutique Hotel Can Alomar, Palma de Mallorca

This is surely the best location in the city for the visitor, on the tree-lined, partly pedestrianised avenue where you will find many of the designer boutiques - beneath the hotel is Louis Vuitton and a Rolex boutique. You are a few minutes walk from Palma cathedral and the sea, and the La Llonja quarter with it's great restaurants and bars is on your doorstep.

The hotel retains some period features, such as the original staircase, but the interior is classic contemporary territory. Everything is immaculate, from the plush rugs to the smartly dressed (multilingual) staff. The neutral interiors create a perfect backdrop for the modern art installations created by Mallorcan artists. These exhibitions change every six months and are a reflection of Palma's thriving art scene. Whilst the hotel definitely has a grown-up feel to it, children and babies are welcome.

Unusually for a city hotel, there are two large terraces on the second floor overlooking the Passeig del Borne, where you can take your meals or enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine. The crowning glory though is surely the rooftop solarium, with a small swimming pool and viewing tower where a couple can have a romantic drink. This fabulous space affords views over rooftops to the cathedral and the bay of Palma. During the summer months, you can arrange for a massage in this unique spot. Facials, manicures & pedicures, and yoga are also offered by appointment.

The sixteen bedrooms & suites are exceptionally generously sized, decorated in soothing tones to create a sanctuary to return to after a busy day. Beds are enormous, with firm mattresses and a selection of pillows, and the plentiful modern windows bring in shafts of light. Simple yet elegant furniture completes the rooms without causing clutter. The free wifi is strong and reliable and works throughout the hotel. If you are noise-sensitive, you may prefer to request a room at the back of the hotel, away from the bustling Passeig del Borne.

The hotel restaurant, De Tokio a Lima, is highly regarded and serves a fusion of Japanese, Peruvian and Mediterranean food. Not all the dishes are fusion, you can still order a plate of Iberian Bellota ham, or roasted octopus, in addition to the sashimi with Sobrasada sauce or rack of lamb with plum sauce. The menu is varied and interesting; vegetarians are also well-catered for. Wines are exclusively from Spain, and I would urge you to try one of the Mallorcan wines, they are fabulous. The lovely staff didn't bat an eyelid when we sat down with our two year child either, the service was exemplary throughout.

Breakfast is a high quality buffet, with hot dishes available to order. Only the best (homemade) muesli, the best orange juice, the best ham, are served. What a lovely way to wake up to the day.

A fine accolade for a city that has flown under the radar for many years.
