Casa Font i Roig Friday Night BBQ 2018 Review

Scrumptious grilled delicacies in Mallorca's rural countryside

Casa Font i Roig is one of the many historical dwellings that have been converted into small boutique establishments in Mallorca. Many of these places have top-notch restaurants and, in the summer months, they often offer themed evenings like BBQ or Tapas Nights. So, on a warm summers evening, we went along to try Casa Font i Roig’s Friday night BBQ bonanza.

Driving through the sleepy village of Maria de la Salut, near Sineu, we approached the 16th-century manor house featuring a pretty sandstone façade, oozing character. We were a world away from the stereotypical tourist resort image of Mallorca, in favour of a more authentic cultural setting. Yet the best was yet to come, as we walked out onto the restaurant's terraces we were greeted with breathtaking views over Mallorca’s rural countryside.

After exploring our handsome dwelling for the evening, for we were lucky enough to be staying at Casa Font i Roig that particular night, we kicked off our gastronomic journey with an aperitif in the form of Aperol Spritz while enjoying the superlative views from the terrace as the sun began to go down. Watching the other guests gather for drinks on the terrace before sitting down for dinner, we were struck by the intimate, friendly atmosphere around us.

The dining terrace was a lush green paradise, thanks to a foliage covered roof. However, my favourite part was the BBQ, a massive grill built into the building very much in keeping with the traditional style of the setting.

We were escorted to our table for two, which was elegantly set out with an earthy colour scheme emulating the rural surroundings. Across from us, a large table had been set for a large group of guests. A truly magical setting whether it be for two or a large group, I thought to myself.

In front of the BBQ, there was already a full banquet of food under a sea of plastic along with a beautiful display of silver serving plates embellished with some colourful flowers. But, before we got up, we took a peek at the wine list and were impressed with what we saw. They offer a whole host of Mallorcan wines and we were particularly happy to see ‘Anima Negra 2 (AN/2)’ and Es Fangar’s ‘Twenty Twelve’ featuring. After the waiter took our drinks orders we were instructed to pick up plates and help ourselves to the spread whenever we were ready.

Arriving at the banquet, we were met by Chantal, the manager, who was taking our order for fresh fish which would be cooked upon request. Options included fillets of salmon and tuna through to shellfish, including shelled and deshelled prawns and even fresh lobster. Being a fish lover I, of course, opted to try all of the above. Luckily, the fillets were quite small so those like me who wanted to try everything could do so without gorging ourselves.

After making our order, we could then help ourselves to the rest of the spread. Chef Lionel was cutting up the steak and serving it while, under the hot plates, there were several different options which had already been grilled on the BBQ.

In terms of meat, there were various types of sausages, marinated chicken, ribs and Iberian pork. Side dishes like garlic bread, potatoes, grilled sweetcorn, various salads and stir-fried vegetables all featured along with some delicious sauces including cocktail sauce, a red dressing and a green dressing. It was an endless supply of food and our plates quickly began to fill up, we had to be mindful of the fish on order too.

We headed back to the table and managed to devour an eminently satisfying plateful of food. Everything was cooked to perfection. Thankfully, I had left just enough room for some fish, as for me the lobster stole the show, it had been cooked with a garlic butter and, upon the first bite, I was in heaven. The prawns were another winning dish. There’s nothing quite like fresh seafood grilled on the barbeque whilst on holiday. We spotted many guests going back for seconds and even thirds, this is definitely the perfect evening for those who liked quantity as much as quality, for you could eat as much as you wanted.

For dessert, we were served a homemade ‘Almond and Orange cake’ which was a soft consistency, almost like cheesecake. The delicate citrus and creamy flavours co-ordinated perfectly, making it light and easy to eat after our feast. In true Mediterranean style, coffee was of course offered and created the perfect ending to our meal.
