Mari-Lin Cafe Lounge Restaurant Review

The owner, Pepe Rubio, greets me and my companion as if he has all the time in the world. With over 35 years of experience in the art and antiques markets in Palma, it's his passion conveyed in the decor of the café. His eyes light up as he tells us about the art on display, which includes an oil painting by the renowned Mallorcan painter Roselló and a captivating portrait by Rudolf Levy of the German artist's wife. All the artists have a link with Mallorca, whether they were born here or, like Levy, took temporary refuge at the start of the Second World War. I begin to wonder how many of Mari-Lin's customers are aware they are dining among great works of art and how many are unaware but sense their influence on the atmosphere.

While the art might be expensive, the menu itself is very reasonable. The Mari-Lin is open from Monday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 23:00, and caters for all appetites and occasions, whether you're stopping for an aperitif, a light lunch, a refreshing gin and tonic or an evening meal. It is mindful of the needs of families with children, offering simple dishes as well as more exotic ones. They have also just added a tasty pizza menu after securing a pizza chef with fifteen years experience. We sample a flavoursome four seasons pizza during our meal and I take note of the 8" size, ideal for those people who love pizza but don't like feeling stuffed for the rest of the day.

We begin with a tapa of duck rolls with foie and apple (€9.50). The combination of tender thigh and cooked apple wrapped in the lightest of pastries, dipped in sweet and sour sauce with a hint of balsamic vinegar, temporarily silences all my thoughts. It's mouth watering. From being an ambivalent eater of duck, I find myself wondering how I might recreate the delicious combination myself. The owner assures me the homemade chicken croquettes (€9) are equally to die for. However, I've opted for the grilled Mallorcan octopus on a bed of grilled vegetables and potato (€12.50). With that delicious hint of charcoal that characterises freshly grilled food, it doesn't disappoint at all. Even better, the portion is generous enough to serve as a light lunch. For those seeking traditional tapas, you'll also be able to satisfy your craving for Spanish omelette, patatas bravas, jamón serrano and calamares.

Mains are divided into meats, fish, vegetarian options, pasta and salads. It would probably be easier to list what the restaurant doesn't offer. Yet, despite the variety, the menu isn't overwhelming. I choose a prawn and scallop ravioli (€14). The pasta is freshly made and the seafood filling satisfyingly fleshy. I enjoy it with a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc (€3.50) which combines perfectly. A bottle of house wine is €16. My companion is pleased with his choice of Steak Tataki on a bed of fresh spinach (€14) complete with flakes of delicious parmesan.

To finish off, Pepe advises us to try the Tiramisu (€6), declaring it to be the best in Mallorca. He might be right. The texture is superb, light and fluffy, and it's just to my taste, not being too sweet and with the perfect strength of coffee. We also try the homemade cheesecake (€6) which has a hint of lemon and is coated in a really tasty raspberry jam. Both desserts are generous. Our host confides that he can't bare the disappointment of small puddings.

With so many eateries in Palma it can be tricky choosing where to go. I left Mari-Lin delighted in the knowledge I'd found a new option which offers delicious food, good value and is centrally located. The restaurant benefits from a team of loyal staff and an owner who takes great care and pride in what he does. A warm welcome, efficient service, tasty food and fine art... what's not to love?
