Naan Street Food Restaurant Review, Santa Catalina (Palma)

South American and Asian street food

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Jose Rains, Mallorca Reporter Updated

Naan Street Food is set in Santa Catalina, Palma’s trendy food district and its concept takes diners on a gastronomic journey around the world. Within a casual yet chic setting, Naan Street Food serves up-to-date international food, in a street food fashion.

On a Friday evening, we met some friends for our 21:30 sitting at Naan Street Food and we were amazed at how busy it was, considering it was the middle of winter in Palma. We did have to wait for our table to be cleared, but all agreed that a busy restaurant is always a good sign!

A few minutes later we were being seated at stools on our elevated table by the window, and were handed our menus and a bottle of wine – which was actually the wine list. A clever little touch! The wine list consisted of a variety of well-known Spanish wines with Riojas, Ribera del Dueros and Albariños all making an appearance. The prices were reasonable from 17€ to 26€. Feasting our eyes on the food menu, it was clear that the creators had gathered a selection of popular dishes from around the world. It quickly became apparent that Asia and Peru were some of their favourite culinary destinations. Fortunately for me, this type of food is right up my street! So I was excited for what was to come!

We had spied other people sharing a selection of dishes on their tables, so decided to also do it the Spanish way and get a few dishes to share between the six of us! The food arrived at different times, which meant we could really enjoy each of their own unique flavours separately.

Naan Ceviche

First up, the Naan Ceviche (16€) which we picked based on a recommendation from friends who had already visited the restaurant! The ‘fish cooked in citrus’ dish is a trend that seems to have spread across Europe in recent years and having tried a few ceviche dishes in Palma I was extremely impressed with Naan’s rendition. Whilst it was citrusy and flavoursome like most other ceviche’s I have tried, I was grateful that the chefs were generous with the raw red onion, chilli and coriander. However the large dried sweetcorn addition to this dish was what made it stand out from the crowd, they certainly added a bit of a contrasting salty crunch to the dish. The Kimchee Salad (12€) perfectly complimented its predecessor! A crunchy Asian inspired salad with pork and BBQ sauce completely bursting with flavour.

Marinated Tuna!

Next up, the marinated tuna, continuing to impress the table! The fish was tender and marinated in an Asian style but served with mashed potato and avocado, typical of Peru according to the menu. The contrast in textures and taste in this dish really worked its magic with every mouthful.

The Peruvian Salad (14€) was next and was a welcome break from the explosion of flavours we had experienced in the previous dishes. It had more delicate flavours, thanks to the quinoa and mushrooms, which meant we could really enjoy the delightful little calamari to be found.

Fish Tacos!

Last but certainly not least, the ‘Fish Tacos (16€)’ were hands down the best dish on the menu. These little treats reawakened our senses thanks to the chipotle sauce combined with lime juice and fresh coriander. We enjoyed them so much that we ended up ordering another batch!

For dessert, one of the boys ordered a pannacotta whilst a few others just had coffees. Thanks to his generosity, we all managed to try a mouthful of the pannacotta which was creamy, silky and everything a pannacotta should be. The bill came to just 28€ per person, which was extremely reasonable for a good feeding with wine. This is the place to come for good quality, fresh food bursting with different flavours.  I will be back to try the Lobster roll next time 19€. There is a relaxed vibe to this restaurant, but it does get busy so please make sure you book to avoid disappointment!
