Santanyi Medieval Festival

Market day in Santanyi

featured in Events reviews Author James Fisher, Mallorca Video Reporter Updated

Santanyi's weekend market is one of the better markets on Mallorca. It's not a big market, certainly not as big as the sprawling market at Sineu, but it has some interesting stalls with unusual gifts to take home, some fresh local produce and even some clothing and art.

This weekend the market is part of the Medieval festival and the stall owners are dressed in traditional costumes and the square outside the church has been decorated with drapes and hangings from ye olde tymes of yore.

The best stalls I found on my visit today were selling locally made jewellery, and unusual plates, and trays from re-shaped spirit bottles. There were a few other colourful stalls with bowls and pottery as well as the usual vast selection of local olives.

The best thing about the festival, which finishes tomorrow, is it's setting. Santanyi is close enough to the popular resort of Cala d'Or that you can make a trip over for a couple of hours, wander round the stalls and have lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants that line the square. It's a very pretty little town and makes for a good break from the beach for a morning.

If you can't make it to the festival this weekend, don't worry too much as the market in Santanyi is on every Wednesday and Saturday and is more or less the same. There are just fewer people dressed in ye olde peasant clothing.
