Palma is ready for yet another balmy Christmas season on the island. The town council have organised a magical evening to celebrate the start of the festivities next Thursday, November 22nd 2018 throughout the city centre.

Conceived to entertain both children and their parents, the show will start at 17:30 with 10 simultaneous street shows that will take place all around the town centre until 19:30. These will include 1950s-style giant insects in and around Plaça d'Espanya, a 'batucada' drumming parade from Plaça d'Espanya to Plaça de Cort, jugglers at Plaça del Marquès del Palmer, acrobats in Plaça del Mercat, aerial dancing in Plaça Santa Eulàlia, a parade with live music and performances along avenue Jaume III and another one on Carrer de la Unió, a laser show in Plaça de la Reina, and audiovisual mapping on the facade of the town hall in Cort. At 19:30, the lights will be turned on at Casal Solleric after a spectacular light and sound show on its facade.

Palma's town council have spent €750,000 on this year's Christmas lights, with 90% of the city' commercial streets taking part in the extravaganza, making it the Spanish city with the highest number of kilometres of Christmas lights this year. This means 3,297 festive illuminations on the streets, plus 2,500 tree decorations and 107,460 metres of garlands above the squares. You can check where they are using this online map. The lights will be on until January 7th, just after the Three Kings celebrations. However, the town centre will still be illuminated during the festivities of Sant Sebastiá, which take place in January.

The official start of Christmas in Mallorca takes place on November 22nd to incorporate Black Friday which, in 2018, is celebrated on November 23rd. Local shops will offer discounts of up to 50% starting on Thursday 22nd until Monday 26th, also known as 'Cyber Monday'. Many shops will even be open on Sunday 25th.

There will also be Christmas markets, nativity scenes on exhibition and lots of activities for the whole family throughout Christmas and until January 7th.
