Tapas are much more than just food in Spain, they're an institution perfectly conveying the Spaniards' relaxed take on mealtimes. Lately, some of the best restaurants in Mallorca are creating new, imaginative ways to prepare these dishes.

Sharing a selection of small, delicious bites with a glass of wine is a great way to spend those balmy summer evenings in Mallorca. It’s possible to try classic tapas prepared with a contemporary twist alongside some completely different dishes. You will find old favourites like 'patatas bravas', meatballs and octopus served in a slightly different (and even tastier) way in some of these trendier establishments. Here is our selection of the best places for modern tapas in Palma.

Can Cera Gastro Bar

The gastro bar at Can Cera Boutique Hotel serves wonderfully constructed tapas in the stunning courtyard of a 13th-century manor house in the back streets of Palma's old town. This romantic restaurant uses only fresh, seasonal produce with the chef creating updated versions of Mediterranean classics. You will find the likes of ‘Portobello mushrooms carpaccio, parmesan, truffle & almonds’ and ‘Tomato & avocado tartar with salmon roe’ alongside more traditional local fare like ‘Acorn-fed Iberian ham’, ‘Artisan cheeses’ and ‘Homemade croquettes’. With impeccable service at this place, staff are always on hand to make recommendations, so do ask.

Ombu Restaurant

Located right in the heart of the city, Ombu Restaurant's terrace is a great spot to enjoy a delicious cocktail, share some creative tapas and soak up the hustle and bustle of the main shopping boulevard. Using high-quality Spanish produce combined with international touches, this restaurant is one of the most popular in Palma, so make sure you book in advance. Their ‘Octopus carpaccio with Thai foam’, ‘Burrata, mixed tomatoes, basil and honey oil’ or their ‘Andalusian style squid with lime mayonnaise’ are just a few of our staple favourites. For a sweet tooth sensation, their famous 'Golden egg' (a chocolate bomb) is a must! This restaurant is also great for large groups and special occasions thanks to their group menus and a private dining area.

Tapa Negra Restaurant

With superb views of the marina and the Mediterranean sea, this tapas bar has a terrace where you can order a glass of wine from their long list, together with a selection of their best imaginative tapas. Some of Tapa Negra's specialities include 'Crystal bread with tomato' (which you should definitely have with the Ibérico ham), 'Eggs with botifarron cream' or 'Tapa Negra', a combination of sobrassada, caramelised onion, tortilla chips, potato mousse, orange oil and Mallorcan olive oil.

Wineing Bar

This modern concept wine and tapas bar is located in an ancient street in Palma's old town. Wineing is a must for wine connoisseurs keen to try a wide range of Mallorcan wines. Just ask for one of their smart cards to taste their assortment of 48 wines from the Balearics and Spain by the glass. You can, of course, order some of their first class tapas. If you are after ‘Dates with bacon’ or ‘Shrimps in garlic’, then you will find it here along with unique dishes like ‘Grilled green asparagus with Mahon cheese’, just ask the staff what would go well with your wine.

San Juan Gastronomic Market

For a true foodie experience head to San Juan Gastronomic Market, an old modernist building recently turned into a gourmet's paradise. Their 17 stalls serve everything from pizza, burgers, sushi and Thai to fresh seafood, Spanish omelette, fideuá and Mallorcan tapas. Locals and tourists travel from far and wide to sample the wide range of culinary delights on offer and we guarantee it will be well worth the trip.
