Portixol Beach, Palma de Mallorca

1. Portixol Beach

Location
Palma de Mallorca

Portixol is found just to the east of Palma's cathedral and is home to a little bay within which a little sand and shingle beach known as D'es Portitxolet Beach resides. The water is generally calm here due to the sheltered nature of the bay.

You will find many locals come here, especially on weekends throughout the year, and certainly show how it's done when it comes to putting on a family beach picnic spread. No sun loungers are available to hire, so bring extra towels or a deck chair for comfort, but there are showers to wash off the salt and sand. Note the beach does get busy in July and August, especially on the weekends, so get down there early if you are planning a trip. Free street parking is available behind the promenade, although you might have to endure a couple of laps of the one-way system to find a space if arriving from late-morning onwards.

Restaurants
Here you will find a choice of fine dining and international favourites through to authentic eateries, most of which have a casual but bustling atmosphere, from lunchtime until late into the night.

Nightlife
If you find yourself looking for somewhere to go after dinner, a Spanish style taverna or a couple of hotel bars can be found within the vicinity of this area. Those looking for a more vibrant party atmosphere, Palma and S'Arenal are both within easy reach (5-10 minutes by taxi) and offer a good selection of late night bars and nightclubs.

Hotels
Portixol is very much a residential area, however there's a good selection of hotels from trendy boutiques through to world-famous names within walking distance of the beach. Palma's city centre is just a few kilometres away where you are spoilt for choice when it comes to hotels, the old-town boutique hotels are a firm favourite for a city-break.

Palma City Beach (Can Pere Antoni), Palma de Mallorca

2. Palma City Beach (Can Pere Antoni)

Location
Palma de Mallorca

The closest beach to Palma is at Ca'n Pere Antoni. This stretch of golden sandy beach starts just beyond the cathedral. A promenade and cycle path runs along its length but behind these lies the main road that takes you to Palma airport.

Can Pere Antoni Beach is very convenient if you are staying in Palma, and boasts exceptional views of Palma Cathedral, especially at sunset.

The stretch of sand runs for 750 metres and is 30 metres deep. This combined with its proximity to the city centre means it can get very busy during the summer. It holds a Blue Flag award for cleanliness and has toilets and showers and a lifeguard presence in the summertime. You will find beach bars and restaurants a stones throw from the beach, especially towards Portixol, with some great options for lunch or a glass of wine. With a whole host of water sports on your doorstep, it would be a shame not to take advantage. Equally, if land sports are more your thing, then the promenade that runs behind this beach is perfect for cycling, roller blading and running.

Due to the proximity of the city, there are plenty of things to see and to do in the area. A good selection of museums, historical buildings, religious buildings and are galleries are open to the public in Palma, and there's a hive of activity in the city centre, with shops, restaurants and bars a plenty. There are many bars and nightclubs in the city that open until the early hours of the morning, especially around the Paseo Marítimo.

Those looking to stay in the area are spoilt with a choice of luxury, boutique and more affordable hotels within Palma and Portixol.

There is also a public beach at Portixol - this is only about half a kilometre further on and is away from the main road. It also has a great selection of very good quality bars and restaurants.

3. Ciudad Jardin Beach

Location
Palma de Mallorca

The small resort town of Ciudad Jardin lies around five kilometres east of Palma. Its beach, also commonly referred to as ‘Ciutat Jardi’, lies alongside a quiet promenade lined with palm trees, offering a huge variety of different styled bars and restaurants.

Sun loungers and parasols are available to rent, along with the added bonus of public showers with toilets. Here, you’ll find excellent wheelchair access, lifeguards on duty, and a sizeable playground nearby, making this one of Mallorca’s more family friendly shores.

Beach bars and beach clubs
A number of smart restaurants and cafes have opened up along the sea-front, and although some of the buildings are still a little bit shabby, there is a definite Miami-South Beach feel to the place.

4. Cala Major Beach

Location
Illetes

Cala Major is located within Palma Bay, around four kilometres to the west to the city of Palma.

At the edge of Palma, Cala Major beach is a soft sandy beach boasting brilliant blue turquoise waters within the resort area of Cala Major/San Augustin. It's location and beauty make this a popular beach in the summer months.

Sun loungers and thatch-roofed parasols are available to hire at an affordable rate, but in the summer you’ll need to be early as they sell out quickly. You have the added luxury of nearby public showers and toilets in situ during the summer months. Ramps facilitate access and lifeguards are on duty.

The beach’s regular crowd welcomes a wide demographic and variety of visitors. Expect anyone and everyone to be on this beach, including noisy children’s birthday parties; reggaeton-blasting teens; city dwellers on their lunch break; mahogany-Mallorquins and of course tourists.

Given its proximity to the city and its modest size, it gets incredibly busy during the summer months, and even more so at the weekends when the locals hit the shores. In the winter you can still enjoy the sunshine with a fraction of the summer crowd. Note dogs are also allowed on the sandy shores in the off season.
