Portol is a small village with roots stretching back to the island’s rural past.
Historically, it was an agricultural settlement, with local families working the surrounding fields and olive groves. Its location away from the coast meant it developed more slowly than Mallorca’s port towns, retaining a traditional, village-like character.
Over time, Portol became known for its charming stone houses, narrow streets, and community-focused lifestyle, preserving a sense of Mallorcan heritage. Today, it remains a quiet, rural village that offers a glimpse into the island’s farming history and traditional way of life.
The only reason for coming here is to visit the ollerias (workshops), where prices are much lower than in the tourist shops.
Good buys include greixoneras (heavy earthenware cooking pots) and ollas (clay storage jars), as well as simple brown glazed plates and plats morenos, glazed bowls painted with symbols (some of the designs go back to Arab times). Several artists specialise in the clay whistles called siurells. There is a specific route you can follow to see these workshops - look out for ‘Ruta del Fang’.
The small resort town of Ciudad Jardin lies around five kilometres east of Palma. Its beach, also commonly referred to as ‘Ciutat Jardi’, lies alongside a quiet promenade lined with palm trees, offering a huge variety of different styled bars and restaurants.
Portixol is found just to the east of Palma's cathedral and is home to a little bay within which a little sand and shingle beach known as D'es Portitxolet Beach resides. The water is generally calm here due to the sheltered nature of the bay.
