Portol
Traditional rural village in central Majorca
The neighbouring villages of Portol and Sa Cabaneta, between Palma and Santa Maria del Cami, have become something of an artists colony. Unlike in Deia and Banyalbufar, though, the artists are Mallorcan - potters taking advantage of the rich local soil.
Life in Portol revolves around the community, and the surrounding countryside offers walking routes and glimpses of Mallorcaโs natural landscapes. Today, itโs a peaceful retreat from the busier coastal towns, appealing to visitors seeking an authentic taste of island life and heritage.

History & Culture in Portol
Portol's early history
Portol is a small village with roots stretching back to the islandโs rural past.
Historically, it was an agricultural settlement, with local families working the surrounding fields and olive groves. Its location away from the coast meant it developed more slowly than Mallorcaโs port towns, retaining a traditional, village-like character.
Over time, Portol became known for its charming stone houses, narrow streets, and community-focused lifestyle, preserving a sense of Mallorcan heritage. Today, it remains a quiet, rural village that offers a glimpse into the islandโs farming history and traditional way of life.
Sights & Attractions in Portol
The pottery
The only reason for coming here is to visit the ollerias (workshops), where prices are much lower than in the tourist shops.
Good buys include greixoneras (heavy earthenware cooking pots) and ollas (clay storage jars), as well as simple brown glazed plates and plats morenos, glazed bowls painted with symbols (some of the designs go back to Arab times). Several artists specialise in the clay whistles called siurells. There is a specific route you can follow to see these workshops - look out for โRuta del Fangโ.
Events in Portol
A pottery fair takes place in March in Marratxi which is hugely popular and showcases a wide selection of pots, plates, tiles and jugs at reasonable prices.
