Ses Covetes
Traditional beach resort in the south of Majorca
Ses Covetes is on the south east coast of Mallorca, and is a purpose built little resort with just a couple of cafes and some holiday accommodation.
The village itself is small and peaceful, but was at one time the centre of an environmental and legal controversy. There are couple of bars and restaurants but nothing too crazy goes on here. The area seems to have suffered from the economic difficulties of recent years - sadly, there are a number of half-finished developments along the coastline.
History & Culture in Colonia de Sant Jordi
The name Ses Covetes translates to ‘the small caves’ in Catalan, likely referencing the natural rock formations in the area. Historically the surrounding area was rural and agricultural, sparsely populated used mainly for fishing, farming and the like.
Much of the land around here is a designated protected natural zone, which limits development. In the nineties a large complex was planned, and following environmental protests and years of legal battles the Spanish Supreme Cour upheld the area's protected status and any buildings were torn down.
Beaches in Colonia de Sant Jordi
People come here for one thing - to get to Platja Es Trenc, a 3km stretch of fine white sand backed by gentle dunes. Es Trenc is one of Mallorca's most famous beaches. It is in a natural setting, south facing and very beautiful.
On the other side of the town is the equally nice Sa Rapita beach.
