Cala Tono Beach, North Mallorca

A pretty little beach in North East Mallorca

featured in Beaches Updated

Renowned as a wonderful, “locals’” beach close to Colonia de Sant Pere, Cala Tono is a small cove full of golden sand, enclosed by the azure sea with views up towards the hills of Cap Ferrutx.

The village of Colonia de Sant Pere is a 10-15 minute walk away and has all the amenities you could need. Access down to the beach is a little bit rough around the edges and not great for buggies or anyone unsteady on their feet. Bear in mind there are no facilities or amenities here.

Restaurants
Your closest location for refreshments or lunch, is the little village of Colonia de Sant Pere with over a dozen seafront restaurants naturally specialising in seafood.

Nightlife
This area of Mallorca is known for being more refined and relaxed. With Arta being the closest hub, this historic town has a charming rather than vibrant nightlife!

Hotels
Residential houses of Estanyol village are found behind the cove along with a number of holiday villa and apartment rentals. If you’re after a hotel specifically, you’ll need to head back to Arta.

Setting & Location

This quiet and pleasant area lies in close proximity to the small port and paradisiacal beaches of Son Serra de Marina. Cala Tonó (sometimes referred to as Cala Toró), is situated 13 kilometres from Artà, between the small inlet of s'Embarcador and the narrow entrance of na Destorba Jornals next to the coastal village of s'Estanyol. The name Cala Toró, replicates the torrent flowing through this area which terminates in the adjoining wetlands. The neighbouring 855-hectar natural park: ‘Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès sa Canova d'Artà’ is made up of sa Canova’s extensive sandy areas and surrounding enormous pine wood; which includes the prehistoric and untouched village of sa Figuera Borda.

Cala Tonó is both scenic and conveniently placed for anyone staying in the peaceful fisherman’s village of  Colonia de Sant Pere, or any of the holiday villas lining this section of coast. You can hike down to this beach from either side, making it an excellent spot in which to cool off from a hot summer’s stroll. The Finca Publica de Son Real Museum is 15 minutes’ drive for those in need of their weekly culture fix.

Water Safety & Clarity

The sea has a sandy and pebbly seabed thanks to its rectangular sea entrance, with a gentle gradient into the water. You’ll often find clumps of floating Poseidon grass, (found in abundance around Mallorca) which tends to gravitate to certain spots. Beyond the clumps, however, is a beautiful transparent, clean and intense sea well worth your wading through the grass. There’s no lifeguard here and so swimming is undertaken at your own risk.

Beach Quality

Naturally, what you find in the water gets washed up on the shore… and so you’ll also find mounds of dried sea grass and vegetation along the shoreline here. This doesn’t cover the whole beach however, so you should still be able to find a nice spot of sand on which to lay your towel. Surrounded by further coves along the coast on either side, this beach is definitely the best in terms of having soft sand and a friendly seabed.

Watersports Nearby

The rocks enclosing this cove on either side make great locations for snorkelling. A kayak or paddle board is also a superb way to further explore this rugged stretch of coastline.

Directions

From Colonia de Sant Pere you can reach the beach by foot from one of the many hiking trails or from the main road out of town; limited roadside parking is available.
